Exercising on the Road

This morning I’m getting on a plane for South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW), a geek festival of sorts in Austin, TX that takes place every spring. While I’m there, there’s a hugely important thing I need to make sure I do. I need to figure out what I’m doing for my workout routine. I can’t blemish my perfect record! I’m at nearly 7 weeks without missing one workout in my Body for Life plan.

So how do I go about doing that? One of my favorite bloggers, Penelope Trunk, has said that you should never throw your lifestyle out the window just because you’re traveling. Why would you stop living your life the way you want it to be just because you’re leaving your comfort zone? A key component in accomplishing your goals is to plan them out, so I plotted out what I’m doing in advance so there is no room for excuses.

And with that, here’s my SXSW exercise schedule:

Saturday, March 13: 20-minute run

Sunday, March 14: Day off

Monday, March 15: 10-minute Pilates video and an episode of the Yogamazing podcast, both of which I’ve already downloaded on my iPhone

Tuesday, March 16: 20-minute run

Some might say I am squandering my time and money at SXSW by using part of my days in Austin to exercise. But to them I say this. You take 20-30 minutes per meal to eat three times a day. You take time to use the restroom when you have to. And you take time to sleep (albeit in smaller amounts at SXSW). In the same way, exercise is an integral part of my lifestyle and I refuse to let anything get in the way of it.

While I was researching traveling on the road I came across a quote that encapsulates why it is so important to me that I exercise during SXSW:

“Develop this mindset: Fitness is not a leisure pursuit. It’s an obligation and a means for you to protect the gift of life you have been given.”

***Update, 3/16/10***

My friend Rob sent me this video straight out of the 90s about how to exercise on a plane. Hilarious! I actually might try doing this on my flight home from SXSW in Austin today.

So how did it go re working out at SXSW? I brought workout gear and shoes and despite my best efforts got ZERO workouts in.

I actually did all of what I planned to do except for Tuesday. It was an early morning right before my flight and I was just too tired to go running! Sometimes it’s OK to let things slide, as long as I’m determined to get back to my routine the next day.

I’m so glad you like the blog, Julie! I hope you’ll keep reading. 🙂 Now I need to see more posts on Needling the Haystack!!!
