Enjoying dinner in the Mission District of San FranciscoWe all want to live richer, more purposeful and rewarding lives, but sometimes inertia gets in the way. I want to experiment with my own life by mindfully simplifying everything I do, cutting out the clutter to get to the heart of my ideal existence.

Prepping for a New Fitness Regime
Today I started a fresh workout regime. I’ll be doing INSANITY workouts and following a very healthy diet plan where I eat lots of good, healthy food, often (five-ish meals per day). I’ve done INSANITY before in two or three false starts, but this time I’m determined to go through the full two-month regimen without [...]

A Shot of Culture
I feel like I’ve been on a long-term binge of mental junk food and candy. The Us Magazines, gossip blogs, tweets and Facebook posts in my world do not do much to help me toward my goals and I feel unsatisfied and sick after bingeing on them, yet still I continue dipping in to it [...]

Letting Go
Lately I’ve started a habit that has had profound benefits to me. I close out of everything when I leave my computer.

Used Up
I love using what I own, down to the the very last drop. There is something so satisfying about looking at an empty bottle or jar, and knowing that you squeezed every last smidge of value out of a product.

Clutter Makes Me Angry!
For the past two and a half years, I have been moving toward a minimalist lifestyle. I thought I was making solid progress. Until I moved out of my apartment at the beginning of this year and realized how much crap I still have in my life.

Fleas and Fly Ladies
A few weeks back I was covered in more than a half-dozen flea bites that itched like crazy. It made sleeping hell as I woke up multiple times throughout the night to itch my wounds, and only now are they gone. I am blaming the compost bin and me not cleaning the kitchen often enough. [...]

Inspiration on the Bus
Earlier this week when I was on the bus, I sat across from a girl who seemed to epitomize calm, the kind of calm I hope to grasp myself someday. Impeccably dressed in a seersucker blazer, denim floods, and fancy grey suede flats, every detail was in place, from her stylish aviator sunglasses to the [...]

Turning Down the Deal
My mother trained me well to take on deals. I grew up shopping at yard sales, consignment shops and discount warehouses like Ross, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. I love her for that. I can fully appreciate the beauty of a serendipitous sale item. But as I’ve continued my quest to live a simpler, more fulfilling [...]

Taking Back the Weekend
I did a back-of-the-envelope calculation of how much time I have during the week, how much time my base commitments take up out of that time (including sleep, work, meals, grooming/showering/prep, exercise etc.) and then how many hours I have left for free time and going after my personal goals. I ended up with 37 [...]

Therapy in Literary Tears
A sadness has hit me recently, and with it the desire to read a good, cry-inducing book. I’m a very private person and disclosing my feelings, even with close friends and family, is incredibly difficult for me. Having a solitary cry over a book seems a much more acceptable (and less vulnerable) form of expressing [...]
